Dia Nacional da Consciência Negra

Brazil is preparing today to commemorate today's "Dia Nacional da Consciência Negra" (Day of National Black Awareness).  This day, in particular, celebrates a hero Capoeira is long familiar with:  Zumbi dos Palmares.  On November 20th, 1695 Zumbi dos Palmares was murdered and for that reason, the united black movement in Brazil decided on this day to commemorate black awareness.  For a history on Zumbi dos Palmares, see this informative handout.

Aruandê Capoeira, as part of our cultural endeavours worldwide, is also gearing up to celebrate this day.  In Brazil, various rodas have been scheduled to celebrate while in the US, Mestre Demétrius will be sharing the history of Zumbi dos Palmares with his students in the US with a celebration at the grand opening of Mestre Armandinho's new class location.
