Dia Nacional da Consciência Negra

Brazil is preparing today to commemorate today's "Dia Nacional da Consciência Negra" (Day of National Black Awareness).  This day, in particular, celebrates a hero Capoeira is long familiar with:  Zumbi dos Palmares.  On November 20th, 1695 Zumbi dos Palmares was murdered and for that reason, the united black movement in Brazil decided on this day to commemorate black awareness.  For a history on Zumbi dos Palmares, see this informative handout.

Aruandê Capoeira, as part of our cultural endeavours worldwide, is also gearing up to celebrate this day.  Mestrando Bicudo and students are preparing for their local cultural event in Tangara da Serra, while Estagiario Veto prepares a roda in Cuiabá.  Mestre Demétrius shared the history of Zumbi dos Palmares with his students in the US as we continue to spread and celebrate Brazilian culture.

Sou Capoeira Photos

Monitor Fernando90 and students celebrated their event, Sou Capoeira!, last weekend with special guests Mestre Topete (Capoeira Angola Resistencia), Mestre Jair (Grupo Liberdade), Professor Menino (Grupo Muzenza), and Professor Tatu (IAAC).  They have sent us some photos to share here.  Congratulations to all of Aruandê Capoeira Vinhedo/Valinhos!
